I’m most likely imagining it but I think my skin looks healthier and my hair looks thicker since I started eating a few (and only a few) Brazil nuts almost every day. These nuts are an exceptionally high source of selenium, a trace mineral important as a cofactor for anti-oxidant enzymes and metabolism enzymes. But there is a danger here as you will see in the video following this. About 100 grams of these nuts will give you about 3500 percent of the daily recommended level of selenium. So two or three nuts at one time are definitely enough. Selenium can be toxic in the 900 microgram range.
Brazil nuts are also a good source of the vitamin B-complex and magnesium. They have all the amino acids too – a complete protein. Bodybuilders, and I was one, love them, probably eating too many. They are a highly concentrated form of vitamins, minerals, and protein – a super food. Watch this informative video made by Andrea Lewis.
If you are eating real food like meat, fish, eggs, and nuts you will probably be getting all the selenium you need. It is only with supplementary selenium where an overdose can happen. Of course if you go crazy with Brazil nuts an overdose might also happen.
