I have been experimenting with saw palmetto, the premise being that if this stuff contains the same agent as propecia, it at least can't do any harm. It wasn't easy to get this thing in Switzerland. I ended up taking a drug called "Prosta-Urgenin" which is said to help against the expansion of the prostate. At any rate, it contains saw palmetto. So I have been taking my tablet every day for over a month now. So far there has been no positive effect at all as regards my hair. Certainly, the slow but mercyless receding of my hairline has not been halted. I am even inclined to think that my hair on the whole has grown more slowly and thinnly. I'm on the verge of ending this experiment and turning to regaine. Andrew

"So I have been taking my tablet every day for over a month now." Even if saw palmetto had some positive effect on the hair (which it probably doesn't), you would not see this in a month. No "experiment" with hair growth will show any results, either positive or negative, in a month. |

Tom, I have a question. It seems that in some of your posts you feel that SP may have an effect on hair loss and in others, you dismiss it. It seems like if SP blocks 5-alpha reductase both type I and II or possibly inhibits the affect of DHT at the sites of androgen receptor cells, then it should work….should it not? It seems that both SP and Fin. Affect the prostate in a similar manor….why not with hair? I don’t think it’s the cure all nor do I expect that popping a pill is going to solve my problems. I am trying to preserve my hair the way it is…growth to me is not a realistic thing. If I should embark on the SP trip, what dose do you believe is effective? I don’t like flooding my body with unnecessary things, but I much rather put this in my body then Propecia. Thanks.

Anonymous: You wrote, "It seems like if SP blocks 5-alpha reductase both type I and II or possibly inhibits the affect of DHT at the sites of androgen receptor cells, then it should work?.should it not?" It does seem to "work" for men with benign prostatic hypertrophy. There have been studies documenting this. There have been no genuine studies documenting the effectiveness of SP in treating hair loss. There has been a lot of advertising copy singing the praises of SP as a hair restorer. If you believe these ads, you'll be vulnerable to all the hucksters on the Internet. Your logic is impeccable though. If it works in prostate cells, why not in hair follicle cells? If only hair loss were a logical problem. |

EXACTLY what tom said. It has been proven to treat the prostate, but absolutely nothing in terms of treatment for the hair. Listen, you need to start taking propecia, or proscar devided into 1/5th's for the same effect at a fraction of the price. Minoxidil is completely different then propecia and the way it combats hairloss. You need to do the research before jumping onboard with something. you have a lot to learn. |

In his book, " The Bald Truth", Spencer David Kobren recommends Saw Palmetto as a good possibility for inhibiting hair loss. He points out also that the label should state that the supplements are concentrated and purified, containing 85-90 percent fatty acids and sterols (if my memory serves me correctly). He also recommends combining the Saw Palmetto with Pygeum extract and/or Nettle. I have bought Saw Palmetto and have been taking it for a week. I don't see any harm in trying to get some Pygeum as well, combining both for a few months to see if it helps. Not sure about the Nettle extract though, might leave it out. I'm still doing the Scalp Exercises but the visible area of my forehead is getting bigger and i'm not convinced of progress at this stage ( about 13 months of daily scalp exercises). I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the above supplements. Tom, what do you think? Colm F, Ireland |

Have obtained Pygeum as well- will be trying the combination of Saw P/ Pygeum for quite a while and will let you know how i get on. I appreciate that possible progress may take several months or more. Colm F |

Thanks matt, But you seem like one of those guys that believes that taking proscar will have no systemic effect on your body if you take it for the long term. Before you dispense advice, I suggest YOU do some research...you have a lot to learn...lol. |

I think taking finestride either in propecia or proscar versions is wise for the short term. You need to keep the hair you already have and then look for other alternatives that will help your hairloss. Right now, propecia and rogaine are proven products. Use them now, think about it later. The more hair you lose, the more difficulty in restoring it. I am sure there will be new products on the market in the years to come, so using rogaine and propecia in the meantime is a smart idea to kind of bridge to the future. I used propecia for 2 years and saw no results and my doctor stopped prescribing it. I use all kinds of supplements now including regenix system. |

Just for the record, this is a different Andrew to the creator of this thread. Im 20, and felt i was just starting to experience mpb. I noticed more hair on my hand when in the shower, and i also noticed that the hair was tapered, meaning they had shrunk in diameter. I still had a full head of hair, and my hairline wasn't receded...although thats what i thought. I started taking saw palmetto. Im at the monthly mark, and during that time i noticed a slight increase in number of hairs on my hands in the shower, although nothing significant or scary. But despite this, i still continued to take it. This shedding has decreased significantly, and my forehead is now alive with hundreds of little hairs. I thought my hairline was fine, but this is just amazing. While i have had success, there could be a number of reasons why it worked. I drink alot of green tea, i intake a very small amount of saturated fat, i regularly take vitamin pills and flaxseed oil, i exercise regularly and probably the biggest reason why i had success, is that i still had a full head of hair. |
