Has anyone had any good results with taking niacin to increase scalp circulation. I take 500 mg daily and feel a tingling in my scalp. Would this not accomplish the same feat as the scalp exercise? |

David T: That's a big jolt of niacin. Do you take it just for the intense flushing of the skin? Many nutritionists claim that if you get an enormous amount of one member of the B-complex, the balance of the B vitamins in the body is thrown off. If you feel the urgency to overindulge in niacin, why not try the scalp exercise too? There's no guarantee that you'll look like Samson (before he met Delilah) but then there is the guarantee of two positive side effects. |

Hi Tom: Thanks for the reply. I lost your url, so it took me a while to get back here. :-/ WRT, the amount of Niacin. I thought 500 mg is low compared to what I've heard others take. I do take it for other reasons than hair. In fact, I thought that it was just a benefit. My primary reason for Nicacin is to raise cholesteral HDL levels and as a general vaso-dialator. Although, I don't have a cholesteral problem, I've readt the cholesteral also binds with the 5-AR enzyme to cause more DHT. BTW, I take many other B vitamins B-6 and B-12 with Biotin. I also take grape seed extract and green tea extract with 3 grams of Arginine. Plus Fish Oil for Omega-3 . Just trying to halt (or better yet) reverse the aging process. While I'm no where near bald, my hair doesn't seem as thick as when I was 20. I'm now 42. The hair line has ont moved back, much, if any. It just seems thinner. Either less hair or the shaft diameter is smaller. I wonder if I have "Female Pattern Baldness" (I am very much male BTW). I understand that men can also get that. As I don't have much facial hair and no chest hair, I don't know if DHT is that much of a problem or not. DHT does cause the hairy body right? I did try your exercise idea a little bit, but kind of fell out of the habit. I do like the idea of it firmimg up the muscles in the upper face. |

David T: "I've read the cholesteral also binds with the 5-AR enzyme to cause more DHT." Interesting. I'd like to read more about this. Can you give me the name of an article or book? "My primary reason for Nicacin is to raise cholesteral HDL levels and as a general vaso-dialator." Niacin also reduces the bad LDL levels. But I wonder with all that general vasodilation, do you ever get an intense itching or tingling in your skin or a throbbing in your head because of dilation of epicranial blood vessels. "I did try your exercise idea a little bit, but kind of fell out of the habit." The scalp exercise if it is done right will certainly give you epicranial vasodilation along with other benefits. But of course you won't achieve any benefit if the exercise is done just "a little bit." I do agree with you, though, that it is easier pop pills than it is to follow an exercise regimen. Perhaps doing both would be a good idea. "DHT does cause the hairy body right?" Elevated levels of DHT often produce terminal hair over parts of the body - chest, legs, etc. And of course we all know what elevated levels of DHT do to scalp hair. It would be great if just the reverse were true. Men can also get female pattern baldness but you can't worry about everything. Just do the scalp exercise the way I indicated and before long you'll have so much hair on your scalp it'll be disgusting. |

Hi Tom: "Interesting. I'd like to read more about this. Can you give me the name of an article or book? " I remember reading it in Durk Pearson & Sandy Shaw's book "Life Extension". "Niacin also reduces the bad LDL levels." Actually it does lower the bad LDL levels, it is the old stand-by prior to the new statin drugs. "But I wonder with all that general vasodilation, do you ever get an intense itching or tingling in your skin or a throbbing in your head because of dilation of epicranial blood vessels. " I get the mild itching or tingling, but no headache. "Men can also get female pattern baldness but you can't worry about everything. " I wonder why that it is and if it will eventually reach a "steady state". BTW, I also take Saw Palmetto and Shen-Min Advanced. |

David T: I wonder what Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw are doing these days. "Life Extension" must have been written twenty years ago. They were world class pill poppers. I hope all those supplements and herbs and shots kept them young. At least they made quite a bit of cash out of their two books. "I wonder why that is and if it will eventually reach a 'steady state.'" I read that Buddhists reach a steady state. They call it nirvana. In that state there is no worry about hair or anything else. |

Hi Tom. "I wonder what Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw are doing these days." Well, if you want to see a picture, do a google search for images and type "Durk Pearson Sandy Shaw" You will see a couple of images, that appear to be somewhat recent pics of them. They do appear to have aged. Durk should be about 57ish now, but he looks much older. He still has hair but it is all gray. Quite disappointing! I first bought their book when I was in my early 20's. I thought, that it was the "fountain of youth" in writting. Man I guess I was wrong. As they say, the proof is always in the pudding. What really surprises me is that they were talking about HGH and IGF-1 levels and how that would keep you young. Well they had access to that, so why did they grow old looking? I'm sure you've seen the HGH secreatagouges on sale now, especially the Don Johnson formula. They claim HGH will turn back the biological clock 10-20 yeas. How can it be any different now, if Durk and Sandy didn't appear to benefit. That is, I'm assuming that they did continue to take some form of HGH. Oh, well, thanks for this cool web site and have a Happy and Safe 4th of July. |

Freddie, Here's what I remember as the good olde days: http://www.lifepriority.com/durk-pearson-sandy-shaw.html This pic was from their book Life Extension. BTW, have you heard from anyone taking the HGH releasers, they claim to regrow hair and change the gray back to the original colour. |

I am a 30 yr old female. I was diagonsed 5 years ago with alopecia. I lost patches of hair in the "snake" pattern all over my head. My doctor wouldn't refer me to a dermatologist and gave me a steriod that literally "burned" my scalp. He told me this autoimmune disease would probably go away in 3 years. Although I have had no "quarter" shaped bald spots, my scalp itches and stings regularly. It also gets very sore. I am not sure what to do about this situation. My hair looks extremely unhealthy and it makes me very sad. I noticed after I had dental braces put on my teeth about 6 yrs ago, I have went down hill dramatically. My skin is tauntly stretched across my cheeks. I look like the living dead. My whole face has changed so much that I look like a completely different person. I have no energy and take b-12 and multi- vits to feel somewhat normal again. Have you heard of dental braces and fillings make someone so sick? I have recently started researching and found some serious info. I can send the links if you prefer. Thanks! |

Laura R: There is a lot in your little paragraph. 1. " My doctor wouldn't refer me to a dermatologist..." You don't necessarily have to follow the dictates of authority figures. Do some reading so that you can make health decisions that benefit you, and not just your doctor. 2. "I have no energy and take b-12 and multi- vits to feel somewhat normal again." I doubt that popping a few pills is going to do it. 3. "Have you heard of dental braces and fillings make someone so sick?" You've probably read about the mercury vapors given off by amalgam (silver) fillings. This is a controversial subject that many gurus in alternative medicine have latched onto. If you have your amalgam fillings removed and replaced by composite fillings, you'd have a big release of mercury vapor into your system. Amalgam fillings are still the strongest - eventually they'll be made without the mercury according to dental research I've read. |

Laura, I am unable to copy and paste links right now, so do a search for this article, it's a good overview of detoxing from various pollutants, including mercury: Nutrients Detoxify And Rebuild An Overwhelmed Immune System by Gloria Bucco I think miso soup would help a lot with your fatigue--it's a very nutritious and medicinal food. There's some info about that at this site. |
