Could the level of hair loss be reflected in how much acne you had as a teenager. I suffered very little from acne and my hair loss has been very very slow indeed. A friend from school had lot's of acne as a teenager and he is now bald. Any link here?

Steve:

I know of no positive correlation between teenage acne and male pattern baldness. Perhaps some people who have had severe acne when young used drugs like Acutane to treat the condition. Acutane is sometimes the cause of hair loss, though usually temporary, in both males and females.

Thanks Tom, it was just a thought. Hairloss truly is a complicated condition. Especially MPB.

It would make sense, since acne and hairloss are both caused by sex hormones, and inflamation supposedly plays a part too. I had acne all the way through high school. It wasn't too bad most of the time, but there were a couple periods of time where I had pretty bad breakouts all over my cheeks and forehead. I started going bald when I was ~17.

It's an interesting theory. I also wondered about it. If there could be a link. Possibly hyperactive sebaceous glands trigger both the acne and the hair loss. I am suffering from both. Contradictorily though, a friend of mine in his 40's had even more severe acne and scarred over all his face but his hair is as thick as a wooly mammoth! So I can't explain why. Acne I could handle but hair loss is really tough to take.

Chris:

You might be interested in this long article - Coenzyme-a. If the ideas in this article make sense to you, post a message. At least the suggested treatment is hair friendly; Accutane is not.

Tom,

That is an excellent article. I am familiar with Dr. Leung and in fact one of my colleagues have been in communication with him in the past 2 years and have shared his correspondences with Dr. Leung with me. I can post them here if you'd like. They're lengthy.

Before I started worrying about hair loss I had to worry about my acne. About a year ago, I tried megadosing on all kinds of supplements and yes I've tried GNC and Swiss B5s to try to treat my condition but didn't see any results. I know it has worked for a lot of people and have read many good testimonials. There are a lot of message boards and web sites dedicated to B5 and from correspondences that my colleague had with me, I find Dr. Leung is a very respectable and good honest doctor. He left HK sometime 5 years ago I believe and is somewhere in the northeastern US, I forget.

Just want to mention that some people seem to experience hair loss from B5 although I can not say for sure from my own experience.

This chappie had used B5 sucessfully for over a year and kept a log and had suffered no adverse effect on hair from B5. He has a website that documents the effects of B5 on acne and hair loss but I don't have his web address handy.

Aside from B5, I must have tried every vitamin mineral and herb under the moon - Zenmed liver detox, every letter of the Vitamin alphabet, all minerals zinc, selenium, magnesium, and despite my best efforts I wasn't getting results. It was at this time when my acne was the worst that my shedding was the worst. I've now fixed all that and my hair shed has ceased. If only the internet had matured 10 years earlier I could have gathered enough information at that time to prevent the 12 years of damage I've endured to my skin and hair. Now I'm visiting these sites trying to find a way to reverse the damage and regrow existing hairs. I don't know to what extent this would be possible.

I shun drugs like Minoxidal and Propecia b/c testimonials have not been too good from what I've read.

From all that I've read I know that causes of hair loss is different for everyone but in my case I'm certain that the acne and hair loss is connected with the sebaceous glands somehow and can not be coincidence.

Tom may I inquire what your typical day's meal for breakfast lunch and dinner would be?

Chris:

I read through the threads you posted links to. The tone of the messages was collegial - polite people trying to help each other out. One problem-solving trait was evident though. For hair loss, acne, and other problems, the key to the solution is as simplistic as a pill - biotin, B5, Avodart. If one doesn't work after a period of time, you switch to another, and then to another. Eventually something has to work, right?

One poster suggested that perhaps megadosing on one member of the B-complex is not a good thing. He said it might be more beneficial to get a balanced dose of the whole complex. I like this kind of thinking.

The reason I take brewer'yeast is that it is a balanced mix of the B-complex in an easily assimilated form. (The Puritan Pride brand tastes good to me. Some brands taste horrible.) A tablespoon gives you only 2.5 mg of pantothenic acid and 19 mcg of biotin, probably not enough to have an effect on acne or hair.

You wrote a long message. There are many things that I'd like to respond to but it would take many pages to do so. I'm not good at writing short comments.

Yesterday's menu:

Breakfast - oatmeal with a chopped up apple and a few walnuts, one percent milk, flaxseed oil and vitamin E.

Lunch - salmon, brown rice, broccoli, a glass of tomato juice.

Snack - orange juice blended with brewer's yeast.

Dinner - Chicken salad, tomato juice, whole wheat toast.
